ACCURACY is key to manufacturing and at Grotech Production Ltd we do a lot of counting and measuring to ensure the amount of ingredients used and product made are spot on.
Everything needs to be accounted for from the number of caps or labels left over at the end of a job to the amount of finished product made which can be measured by weight or volume.
Whether we are accounting by weight or counting, all measurements need to be true and accurate which involves calibration. Calibration is particularly important to ensure that the device being used to make the measurement gives a true result. The scales need to be checked against a certified weight and the hydrometer or pyknometer, used for measuring density, needs to have been certified by the manufacturer. This is particularly important when it comes to converting the measured weight of a finished product, as checked on the line, to the volume declared on its label.
As experienced contract manufacturers and packers for the agricultural, horticultural and general chemical industries, the accuracy of our production process is of paramount importance and we recently invested in five new sets of Board of Trade approved of industrial weighing scales. Custom made to our requirements, these dual range scales offer greater consistency and reliability whether we are weighing a small amount or much larger. This ensures we get the exact mix we want every time and we fill every container as we should.
Counting is another way of keeping track of what we produce. This can be done automatically by a ‘magic eye’ on the production line totting up how many bottles pass by.
A manual, physical, count can be simplified if the number of units in a box is known and the number of boxes on a pallet is easy to see from its stacking formation. For instance, if there are 12 units in a carton, 10 cartons to a layer and five layers on a pallet, it is easy to calculate that the pallet contains 600 units. This only works if the carton contents can be relied upon but the design we use when packing them makes it easy to spot in any are missing before the box is closed.
Of course, that’s not the only sort of measuring that we do. We also measure viscosity, pH, surface tension, particle size and the concentration of the active substances in our products but that, as they say, is another story!
