FOOD is essential to life. If you think back a few months to the start of the Coronavirus pandemic when panic-buying led to aisles upon aisles of empty shelves in supermarkets, then never before has this been more evident.
Tomorrow – October 16 – we celebrate World Food Day, a United Nations Food and Agriculture event which this year calls upon us to ‘Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together.’ Reflecting on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on countries worldwide, the theme is calling for global solidarity to help the most vulnerable people recover and make food systems more sustainable, stronger and resilient to catastrophic events.
While this may seem something more suited to governments and big businesses to achieve, World Food Day highlights how as consumers we too have a part to play in terms of influencing what food is produced by what we choose to buy and eat. For instance, we can:
- Choose to eat healthily and from a diverse range of locally produced, seasonal foods;
- Grow food at home – even pots or small beds can yield produce;
- Avoid wasting food – cook what we need and store leftovers safely for another time;
- Support volunteer initiatives getting food to the needy and vulnerable;
- Spread the word – raise awareness of the importance of eating well.
Preserving access to safe and nutritious food is essential, particularly for those in poor and vulnerable communities and it is important to recognise and support the work that farmers and others involved in the food industry do in making sure food gets from farm to fork.
