Grotech’s Taster Session for Local Jobseekers

Earlier in November, we worked with our local Jobcentre to offer a manufacturing taster session to a small group of jobseekers who were exploring new career paths. The aim was simple: to give people in our community the chance to experience a real working environment, build confidence, and gain insight into whether manufacturing could be a future opportunity for them.

A Warm Welcome and a Supportive Environment

Participants told us they felt genuinely welcomed from the moment they arrived. They said they were treated as potential colleagues rather than visitors, and that the team took time to support them, answer questions, and explain how things worked. This positive first impression helped set the tone for the entire experience and gave them a clearer idea of what it’s like to work as part of a production team.

A Clearer Understanding of Manufacturing Work

The session combined practical, hands-on time with short, focused introductions to key topics such as health and safety, weighing systems, line operation, and quality checks. One participant particularly enjoyed learning each role on a production line, saying the variety gave a better sense of what a full day’s work feels like. Another noted that some tasks — like weighing to percentage accuracy — were new, but the support from the line team made it easy to follow.

They also learned about the wider responsibilities within a manufacturing environment. Topics such as COMAH and the sanitisation steps involved in handling certain materials were completely new to them and helped broaden their understanding of the industry.

Shaping Future Job Prospects

Most importantly, the experience had a real impact on how participants viewed manufacturing as a potential career.

When asked whether they could see themselves working in this environment, the response was a confident “yes.” The exposure to real tasks, supportive colleagues, and an active production line gave them the reassurance they needed to see manufacturing as a credible and appealing employment option.

They told us the visit gave them a renewed sense of confidence, and that they would recommend this type of experience to others who are unsure about their next step or who want to ease back into the world of work.

Helpful Feedback for Future Sessions

Participants also shared some constructive thoughts. For those who had been out of work for some time, the placement was a big — but positive — step. One noted that extending the experience to five days might give future jobseekers an even better feel for the rhythm of factory work.

Small details made a difference too, such as access to free tea and coffee, which helped the environment feel more welcoming and less daunting.

Making a Meaningful Difference

The session made a meaningful difference for the people who took part. It helped them gain confidence, learn practical skills, and see manufacturing in a new light. For us, it was a rewarding opportunity to share what we do, answer questions, and support members of our community as they explore new possibilities.
