Case Study –
From Problem Brief to Safer Supply Chain
Overview
A new customer approached us with a powder blending and packing requirement, supplying a specification sheet and safety data sheet (SDS) from previous production runs with other manufacturers. Before a single bag was blended, our team identified issues with both the documentation and the formulation itself – and proposed solutions to both.
Challenges
A review of the customer’s SDS flagged two significant problems. Two raw materials had been misclassified as safe when in fact one was caustic and one was an oxidising agent – both requiring hazard warnings on the product label. The oxidising classification also triggered an ADR obligation: ADR (the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) sets strict requirements for how hazardous materials must be packaged, labelled, and transported, adding cost and complexity to the supply chain.
Separately, the customer had flagged a known processing problem: the blend was hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbed moisture from the air and tended to cake during blending.
Solutions Provided by Grotech
We proposed a reformulation using alternative raw materials that delivered the same headline specification, while addressing both issues. The revised formulation avoided the caustic and oxidising classifications entirely, removing the need for hazard warnings and the ADR transport requirement. It also blended more cleanly, with significantly less caking. We produced a corrected SDS to reflect the new formulation.
