Pedal power aids social distancing

STAFF at Yorkshire’s premier contract manufacturer and packer are turning to pedal power instead of public transport to get them to work in a bid to maintain social distancing.

Grotech Production Ltd in Goole has remained operational throughout the coronavirus lockdown, implementing strict social distancing and hand hygiene along with other measures governing deliveries and working from home for office staff to ensure its employees stay safe.

At the suggestion of production Team Leader Stuart Slack, the company has installed a new cycle rack at its site in Britannia Road to enable staff to bike to work instead of taking the bus. Another employee who is shielding at home due to health reasons is refurbishing a number of bikes that Grotech will then make available to staff who want to try cycling to work.

“As suppliers to the agricultural sector it has been important for us to keep working during the lockdown to support farmers and help ensure there will be food in our shops and on our tables in the months to come,” explained Grotech’s MD Martin Usher.

“However, the health of our people has, and continues to be, just as important. Everyone is getting behind the measures we have put in place to ensure their safety, some coming up with ideas for how we can take these further. Family members have also been getting involved; the wife of one of our operators created Fred, our Safety Bear, who has been reminding us about hand hygiene and maintaining the 2m distance.”

Martin added: “The cycle rack is a great idea. It not only helps with regards to social distancing but is also good for the environment, personal fitness and a great way of enjoying the good weather and great outdoors.”
