World Environment Day Celebrates Biodiversity

RESPONSIBILITY for the world in which we live should be high on everyone’s agenda; after all we are its caretakers for future generations.

The United Nation’s World Environment Day aims to raise awareness of the environment and specific environmental issues. Marked by some 143 countries worldwide, World Environment Day was first held in 1974 and focuses on a wide range of environmental concerns from pollution and global warming to sustainable food production and the protection of wildlife.

The theme this year was ‘Celebrate Biodiversity’ and was led by Colombia which is one of the world’s largest megadiverse nations. Part of the Amazon rainforest, Colombia ranks first in its bird and orchid species diversity and second in plants, butterflies, freshwater fish and amphibians.

As a leading player in the bespoke agricultural chemical and horti-chem industries Grotech Production Limited prides itself on being as environmentally responsible and sustainable as possible. We are only too aware of the persistent bio accumulative toxic effect that some pesticides can have on our biodiversity and have long been an advocate of more sustainable and renewable agri and horti chemical fertilisation systems.  We work proactively with our customers to develop novel but effective biopesticidal products that meet regulations and suit their cost, consumer markets and lead time requirements.

We are very proud to have been the first contract producer in the agrochemical manufacturing and horti-chem industries to have been awarded, and retained, accreditation in its own right to the Soil Association and are pleased to be members of the International BioControl Manufacturers Association.

Reducing and mitigating the impact our manufacturing processes and operations have on the environment is very important to us. Through our work with the Bio Renewables Development Centre we have implemented a robust waste management system,  reduced our energy consumption and emission levels and sought to reduce our carbon footprint further with Bike to Work and carpool schemes including the recent investment in a new cycle rack.

The use – and subsequent disposal – of single use plastic is also close to our hearts. Where possible we have replaced single use plastics with something more sustainable and where we’ve not been able to find an alternative, we are exploring new ways of disposing of these plastics in a responsible and hopefully, more value-adding way.

In line with this year’s World Environment Day theme we are keen to celebrate our own local biodiversity and to support it have sown a bed of wildflowers at the back of our factory. Some blooms have already appeared and we look forward to this providing a habitat for and attracting many butterflies, bees and other wildlife in the summer months ahead.
