AUGUST is traditionally the month when a large percentage of the nation’s 16 and 18-year-olds stand by their beds eagerly awaiting those highly prized exam results.
This year they will still be waiting but with the added uncertainty brought about by the Coronavirus Pandemic that saw the outcome of nearly two years’ worth of study taken largely out of their hands when public exams were cancelled and vocational courses brought to a sudden end.
No doubt there will be much formulating of Plan A and Plan B going on as they consider their next steps and at Grotech Production Ltd we’d also like to suggest a potential Plan C in the way of a career – a paid placement – with us!
Finding and keeping good people is a challenge for all businesses and we are no exception. Part of our strategy though, rather appropriately for a bespoke agrochemical manufacturer, involves growing our own talent!
Each year we recruit an apprentice to deepen and strengthen either our engineering or production team in the belief that in doing so we will be improving our business performance by developing the knowledge and capability of everyone in it.
In line with this, all our supervisors are working towards achieving nationally recognised management qualifications and other work-related qualifications of their choice to ensure our apprentices are well supported as they embark on their careers with us.
From those university and college students pondering what to do next and whether our industry would suit them, we welcome applications for work experience. As we don’t believe in un-paid internships, we always pay for these placements and in the last five years have employed three summer students, two office apprentices, four engineering apprentices and a manufacturing management apprentice.
Of course, nothing in life is certain long term. Some of these opportunities haven’t worked out, some young people have been attracted elsewhere and others have said ‘thank you, but it’s not for me’ safe in the knowledge that they gave it a go and now have a better idea of what they do want.
From our perspective, whether they have stayed with us or not, they have all taught us something and their contribution has helped the team at Grotech Production become even greater ‘helpful manufacturing people’.
