WITH Christmas fast approaching, as we load your finished goods on to lorries for shipping out, we began to wonder what sort of pallets Santa uses to ensure his cargo stays safe and sound during transit!

While pallets can be any size most conform to a limited range and design that make them easier to pack in shipping containers or load onto lorries. They can also be made of different materials such as wood or heavy plastic.

Here are some key things to look out for when deciding which pallet to use for your goods:

  • Blue leased pallets that can be recycled can be a good choice if they suit the needs of your end customer. Commonly made of wood, they are available sized 1200 x 1000mm with a four-way entry for moving by forklift or pedestrian powdered pallet truck; 800mm which is usually used in France and as a 1140 x 1140mm square design which is suitable for carrying four 200 litre drums. The nine most common pallet designs used in the chemical industry are listed in the CP1-CP9 range.
  • If using a wooden pallet make sure it is either made of ‘presswood’ which is made by a chipboard process or the wood is stamped as being ‘heat treated’. Being heat treated means the wood won’t be carrying potentially forest damaging insects between countries. Not having a heat treated pallet could mean your goods are refused entry at a receiving port and condemned to being immediately destroyed. This requirement results from the ISPM-15 standard of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).
  • Having selected a pallet to stack your goods upon, consider whether further protection for them might be necessary to prevent damage in transit. This might involve the use of some form of pallet box such as a big corrugated box or stack of wooden collars. Finally, to secure the product on the pallet, it is wrapped in either a stretch-wrapped cloak or a shrink-wrapped sleeve.

Of course, we realise that Santa’s elves are expert packers and use magic to keep his load safe but easily accessible on the sleigh. But if you, on the other hand, would like to experience some of Grotech’s own brand of magic when it comes to packing and shipping your goods please get in touch:  contact us on 01405 761746 or email sales@grotechproduction.co.uk.
